Australia Gears Up for Self-Driving Cars: Public Consultation on Automated Vehicle Safety Laws Underway

Australia is actively preparing for a future where automated vehicles are commonplace. The government, in collaboration with the National Transport Commission and state and territory authorities, is seeking public input to shape new laws governing the safe deployment and operation of these vehicles.

The initiative, centered around the Automated Vehicle Safety Law, aims to update the existing regulatory frameworks to accommodate the rapid advancements in automated vehicle technology. The goal is to harness the potential benefits – improved road safety, enhanced mobility, increased productivity, and reduced congestion and environmental impact – while mitigating potential new safety risks.

This consultation encompasses the entire regulatory framework for automated vehicles, building upon previous work by the National Transport Commission. Specific policy areas are open for feedback until June 11, 2024, offering the public a chance to influence the direction of automated vehicle regulation in Australia. Interested parties can contribute their thoughts and opinions via the National Transport Commission’s website.
